A.R.T. of Safe Interruption is a simple, actionable framework to help someone experiencing abuse or domestic violence. It stands for Ask, Respond, Tell:
When the perpetrator is not around, ask if the victim needs help. Allow the person to speak about their situation.
Intervene if it is safe to do so by:
Report the incident to the appropriate authorities via National Anti-Violence and Sexual Harassment Helpline (NAVH), or call the police if there is imminent danger. Tell the victim where and how to seek help.
Domestic violence often hides in plain sight — in controlling behavior, emotional manipulation, or isolation. The A.R.T. model gives young people a safe, effective way to act without overstepping. It reminds us that you don’t need to rescue someone to make a difference — just showing up with calm, care, and compassion can be enough to open a door to safety.
